ANNUAL DINNER
Walking
Scrambling

Retreat & conference centre!

RYDAL HALL, NEAR AMBLESIDE

5 – 7 Dec 2008

Contact Us

The Annual Dinner, at which you can barely recognize people because they haven’t got fleeces on, will this year be held at Rydal Hall, between Ambleside and Grasmere. It is the Carlisle Diocesan Retreat & Conference Centre and is a beautiful place to stay with the feel of a lovely, Christian hotel. Many of us will have walked through its grounds on the way to the Fairfield Horseshoe or had tea in their tearoom or stayed here for John & Mike’s joint 90th birthday celebrations!

This time we have booked to stay in the Hall itself. There will be a variety of rooms available – twins, singles, doubles & family, ensuite or shared bathrooms – all for £40.50 B&B per night on a first-come first-served basis. There is also the option of camping in the grounds or staying at a local YHA (Grasmere Butharlyp Howe being the nearest) for those who wish. Further details and booking forms will be sent out in August. This is a parent-friendly event!

Our speaker this year will be our very own John Fleetwood. The cost for the meal is about £20 and there is a delicious choice of food available with a veggie option.

This year we’ll once again be settling in at Oakwood Lodge, owned by the Bendrigg Trust, a residential centre just off the M6, well located in between the Lake District and Yorkshire. Our accommodation is in a comfortable self-catering annex where we’ll be able to indulge in the usual festivities, including a slightly different theme for New Year’s Eve itself!

22 places available, this is a parent-friendly event. Cost is £68 for 4 nights + approx £12 food and entertainment. As usual, we’ll be eating out one evening.

CONISTON COPPERMINES, LAKE DISTRICT

Youth Hostel

30 Jan – 1 Feb

Contact Us

A change of venue this year for Burns Night sees us visiting Coniston Coppermines and having exclusive use of the Youth Hostel. It’s been a while since we stayed in this great location (Graham Harris broke his leg last time, I seem to remember…) and it’s about as remote as you can get in England, yet accessible by car. This makes it parent-friendly and there are smaller rooms available too! The Coniston Fells can be explored from the door; no need to use the car once you’re there.

We’ll celebrate Burns Night on the Saturday evening with the traditional haggis, tatties and neeps. 26 places at £30 each, inclusive of the Scottish feast.

NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS, SCOTLAND

House

14 – 20 Feb

Contact Us

The ever-popular winter week makes its long-awaited return to the
Cairngorms.  Britain's only arctic wilderness offers challenging hill
walking to some of our highest peaks (and a fairly good chance of full
winter conditions) with easy access to some of Scotland's finest climbing in
the northern corries.  There's piste skiing at Cairn Gorm and ski touring
options too.  The Monadh Liath, Drumochter munros and Creag Meagaidh are
also nearby with loads more walking and climbing.  Competence with axe and
crampons is essential (and preferably navigation skills too) although we may
be able to arrange training for first timers on request (and at an extra
cost).

We are staying at Tighguish house near Aviemore on the Rothiemurchus estate from Saturday until Friday.  There are 16 places at £95 each.  Book early because they are already filling up!

Contact Us

A 10 minute walk from the road, the Lagangarbh is a comfortable hut, with a well-equipped kitchen, gas heating and a shower. Less intimidating than the Ben or Torridon, the immediate vicinity offers plenty of scope at all grades of climbing and winter hillwalking (presuming the weather is favourable of course!). Another minor point that may find favour with the non-pioneering types are the much-reduced walk-ins … Always a much-enjoyed weekend with good company,.

The cost for 3 nights is £33, inclusive of two evening meals.

The CIC is legendary: a superb location, with the North Face of Ben Nevis on your doorstep. We’ve booked the hut for 4 nights (Friday to Tuesday) and have managed to get 8 places. Previous winter mountaineering experience is essential as this is not a place for beginners. Good company in amazing surroundings is guaranteed.

Please arrange a climbing partner before you book and book with Lindy as a pair.

As we expect demand to be high and all the places to go quickly, email Lindy from Monday 3rd November.

Accommodation cost will be £50, food will be organised separately.

GRASMERE, LAKES

Youth Hostel

27 – 29   Mar?

Contact Us

Would you like to get away to the Lake District for an early spring walking weekend? Last year a group of us met for this weekend, which bridges the gap of more accessible events between New Year and the AGM. Spring will be in the air and the fells should be quieter as it is before the school Easter holidays.

This is a parent-friendly event and the idea is you book into Butharlyp How Youth Hostel individually. (Please note that the club has group membership of the YHA, so you can book at members’ rate).

Give Jessica a ring if interested.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE

Adventure Plus

Many of you will remember that Jon Cox came to speak at our annual dinner in 2005 and that he runs Adventure Plus, a Christian provider of adventure activities for schools and youth group at a number of centres around the UK.

Would you like to use your skills and love of the outdoors to get alongside young people from a variety of different back grounds, and help an organisation like A+ in the process?

Do you know friends who are not climbers who might be happy to assist with other activities including: minibus driving, worship band, catering support...

If you want any more info - why not check out the A+ web site (http://www.adventureplus.org.uk/) , or contact them on 01993 703308 or email Jon himself (mailto:jon@adventureplus.org.uk?subject=CRMC Adventure Plus Enquiry). You could be a real encouragement to them....
